Lovegobuy Volumetric Weight: Read Your Parcel Quote

Understand why a light parcel can have a higher billing weight, with a worked example and the questions to ask about your chosen route.

AT A GLANCE

Key points

  • Product weight, packed scale weight and chargeable shipping weight describe different things.
  • Use the dimensions, units and divisor specified for the exact shipping service.
  • Compare packing options using the revised parcel quote, including any added service charges.

When comparing a Lovegobuy parcel quote, look for the chargeable weight, not just the weight of the products. The packed box can occupy enough space for a carrier to use a dimensional calculation. The useful question is which weight rule applies to the route you selected.

This article focuses on that calculation. For the wider item, delivery and payment budget, use the spreadsheet ordering guide.

Distinguish three different weights

Product weight describes an item or a recorded listing value. Actual parcel weight is what the packed shipment registers on a scale. Volumetric weight converts the box’s dimensions into a weight used for the shipping calculation.

DHL Express explains that its chargeable weight is the greater of actual and volumetric weight. Check how your own route defines and rounds that figure before comparing prices.

Record the number beside its label. A note saying only “3 kg” leaves out whether it refers to loose items, the finished parcel or the weight used to bill it.

Work through a dimensional example

DHL Express’s UK weight guidance uses dimensions in centimetres divided by 5,000. Here is an editorial calculation using that method, with an assumed actual parcel weight of 3 kg:

42 cm × 28 cm × 24 cm ÷ 5,000 = 5.6448 kg volumetric weight.

The dimensional figure is higher than the assumed scale weight. Any billing increment or rounding still needs to be applied according to the selected service. This is a calculation example, not a quote or measurement for one of our products.

Input or result Example value
Outer box dimensions 42 × 28 × 24 cm
Box volume 28,224 cm³
Divisor used in this example 5,000 cm³/kg
Calculated volumetric weight 5.6448 kg, before billing rules
Assumed actual parcel weight 3 kg

Keep the units consistent. Do not put an inch measurement into a formula specified for centimetres.

Check the service before choosing a divisor

A familiar carrier name is not enough to establish one universal calculation. The DHL eCommerce US chargeable-weight page publishes a divisor of 6,000 for its centimetre-based method, alongside service-specific conditions. That differs from the DHL Express example above.

Lovegobuy’s fee explanation says weight, method and destination affect international shipping. It does not establish that every available route uses either of these DHL calculations. Read the rule attached to your selected line or ask support to identify it.

Compare packing changes using the revised quote

Before asking to remove packaging or repack a parcel, write down what you want to keep: a shoe box, protective shape, accessories or original tags. Then ask for the proposed packed dimensions, scale weight and any packing charge.

Compare the full revised quote with the original. A changed dimension may affect billing weight, but the result depends on the route’s rules and the protection you choose. Keep the item list and destination the same when comparing the two options.

An example request:

Please confirm the outer dimensions, actual weight and chargeable weight for this parcel, with the divisor and rounding rule for [route]. If it is repacked as [option], what are the revised quote and packing charges?

Once the parcel is sent, use the separate parcel tracking article to follow shipment events.

Before paying, check any shipping coupon’s conditions against the selected quote. For an EU delivery, also establish which import charges are included; chargeable weight alone does not answer that question.

Common questions

Does every Lovegobuy route use a divisor of 5,000?

Check the selected route’s published calculation. The 5,000 divisor in this article is a DHL Express example; the DHL eCommerce reference uses 6,000 with centimetres for its stated calculation.

Can removing a shoe box guarantee cheaper shipping?

Compare the new dimensions, actual weight, billing rules and packing charges. Ask what protection remains. A smaller box is not itself a guaranteed saving on the final quote.

Can I calculate delivery cost from the product’s listed weight?

You also need the final packaging, the route’s chargeable-weight rules and its current price schedule. A weight calculation produces a weight figure, not a complete shipping price.
